Wool coats are a staple in any winter capsule wardrobe. They can easily be dressed up or down, they come in hundreds of styles and lengths, and they’re timeless. I personally think everyone should have at least one wool coat in their wardrobe. They’re the perfect investment piece and will last you forever.
Since winters in Boston are very cold and windy, I’ve started investing more in my coat collection these past few winters. Last year, I purchased the Wilfred Cocoon Coat Long. I absolutely adore this coat. It’s the perfect tan color, it’s unbelievably warm (hello cashmere!), it hits right below my knees, and it can easily transform any outfit. I will say that the cocoon coat looks best when dressed up slightly. As much as I love rocking a sweatsuit everyday, if I want to wear this coat I usually wear real pants.
As I said, I live in sweatsuits. So this year I wanted to get a wool coat that I could use to elevate my loungewear. I decided to purchase the Babaton Stedman coat in black. This coat is your typical menswear-inspired wool coat with a single-button closure. I love how minimal this coat looks and it’s extremely versatile.
If you’re just starting to build up your wool coat collection, I would recommend first getting a classic menswear-inspired coat like the Stedman in a neutral color. You can’t go wrong with tan, black, or grey. If you’re looking for a wool coat to wear to work (whenever that will be) then try going for a more elevated style like a cocoon coat or a front-belted coat.
